When Mrs. L’s devoted adult children decided a move to a secure, luxury senior community was best for her safety due to mild cognitive decline, they faced a significant challenge: transitioning her from a spacious 3500 sq ft house to an intimate 850 sq ft apartment. A top priority was preserving the comforting essence of her beloved home, particularly the living room centered around her fireplace.
Entrusted with this delicate task, our goal was to beautifully recreate the feeling of home within her new surroundings. We collaborated closely and transparently with Mrs. L’s children, involving them in the decision-making process while always being mindful of their busy lives. Together, we aimed to bring forward the most cherished familiar elements – from specific wall colors and her favorite chandelier to key furniture pieces and, remarkably, even the warmth of her fireplace.
Our process began with creating a detailed design presentation and floor plan, ensuring everyone was comfortable and excited about the vision. With approval, we skillfully deployed our trusted network of contractors. They meticulously painted, applied wallpaper, outfitted closets efficiently, expertly hung the chandelier, and constructed a beautiful custom electric fireplace with an elegant mantle, successfully echoing the heart of her former living room.
Once the apartment was perfectly prepared, we managed Mrs. L’s move seamlessly, settling her quickly into her new, familiar space. The true success of this collaboration shone during a follow-up visit. While Mrs. L’s memory challenges meant she didn’t recognize our team member, Ellen, she was absolutely radiant with joy, proudly showing off her new apartment. She enthusiastically shared stories of the “team of magical ladies” who had so beautifully set up her home.
Witnessing Mrs. L’s genuine happiness and knowing we could recreate such profound comfort and familiarity, despite the significant downsize and cognitive considerations, is deeply fulfilling.
